It’s no secret that we live in a tiny home. We sometimes get frustrated because we feel like we’re all tripping over each other… and over all the toys, haha. Most of the time, though, we love it. We’ve worked hard these last few years to make it our own, and it really feels like home. :)
But yes: we really need to stay on top of it or else it can become a disaster very quickly. So recently, we’ve been on a decluttering/organization mission. We aren’t getting rid of everything; we still want our place to feel inviting and warm. I suppose we just want things to reflect the stage of life we’re in, and be a bit more functional. We also want to make the seasons/holidays fun for Emma without bringing tons of additional stuff into our home!
We teamed up with The Company Store to (finally) turn Emma’s nursery into a toddler’s bedroom… and to decorate the living room for Halloween since we’re having a little costume party for Emma and her friends before they go trick-or-treating this year! This project was particularly special for me because my own childhood bedroom was outfitted in The Company Store. It was a favorite of Mom’s, and as I grew, she’d let me update my room with it. Emma’s Bedroom
Until the makeover, Emma’s room legitimately still looked like this, only far messier. It was a postcard of her infancy, with gray elephants–the theme I picked before she was born–everywhere. But much how Teenage Kelly taped posters over her little girl wallpaper, Emma had crowded out those gray elephants with pink princess and mermaid dolls and toys… and it was clearly time for an update!
Luckily, The Company Store had a ton of hot pink and princess- and mermaid-themed bedding and decor, and it took us all of a half hour to decide what to get. (There were literally shrieks and clapping as we scrolled through the options, haha.) Because Emma will be transitioning to a “big girl” trundle daybed sometime after Christmas this year, we decided to get quilts and shams that would work with both the crib (now) and the daybed (later).
I’m so happy with how everything turned out! Emma absolutely loves it, and she’s constantly asking guests if she can show them her new room when we have company over. And whereas before, she rarely spent time in the room–she now plays in there all the time. Bedtime has become a lot easier, too, because who wouldn’t want to fall asleep surrounded by princesses and mermaids?!
One little thing I still need to work on is styling her bookshelf. Any tips there?! It seems like no matter what I do, I just can’t make children’s books look pretty. Maybe organize them by color? Or perhaps just embrace the fact that this is a child’s room, and that Pinterest is not real life. ;) Though seriously: the Larkins need this in our lives. Right?!

Living Room
And here’s what we did with the living room! Again, we didn’t want to overcrowd the area, so we opted for pillow covers only, which I find to be so helpful when decorating small spaces. (I have four inserts, and switch out the covers for holidays and the change of seasons. Covers take up very little room; it’s those decorative pillows themselves that are trickier to store.) And, I mean, how cute are the trick or treat covers?! Emma loves ’em, and it’s how we’ve actually been teaching her what Halloween is all about!
I try to get something up on the mantle every season, and this felt autumn leaf garland is downright adorable. We put it up before the leaves started to change, and it sparked some conversations about why and when the leaves would fall. I think it’ll be with our family for a long time. :)
Oh, and the pumpkin-colored (monogrammed) throw? Everyone fights for it at night. It’s cuddly and warm yet not itchy, and it adds the perfect seasonal pop of color to the room. Btw: The Company Store is offering free monogramming until 11/7!
