Preppy Little Girls' Room Inspiration

Slowly but surely, we’re making some headway on the house! Last week, we started working on designing the bedrooms: our master, Emma’s room and Lucy’s room. The one we’ve made the most progress on is Emma’s, though, so today’s post is all about that! (If you’re interested, here’s the full house tour which I shot before the movers arrived.)

I LOVE Emma’s room.

We’ve been told that the room was originally the master bedroom before the attic was dormered out and was “moved” there, and that makes a lot of sense if it’s true! There are a ton of windows which provide the most unbelievable natural light, a hallway of closets which is a complete dream, and a full bathroom which is great for guests. Mitch and I joke about the two-year-old having the best room in the house, but it’s beautiful, and it makes my heart happy that Emma’s going to grow up here. (Lucy’s room is right down the hall, btw, and nearly identical!)

Because we now have two small children at home now–one of which is only a few weeks old 😉–we decided early on that we were going to hire Kira from Kira David Design to help us with the design process of the house. Not only does Kira completely understand and embrace our traditional style, she also gets. things. done. I’ve been completely in awe of how she’s able to break things down into little, manageable tasks for us. She takes the overwhelming parts of design out of the picture and makes the process fun. So many, many thanks to Kira and how much she’s accomplished so quickly. We’re a couple weeks away from being done with the room but I’m in love with it already! My Pinterest dreams for Emma are coming true!

Not everything is set in stone, but what you see above the general feel we’re going for. The big things:

The wallpaper:

We are working with Brooke & Lou to wallpaper my office, but because I fell so completely in love with the company almost immediately, I recently went ahead and purchased some of their paper (and a matching pillow) for Emma’s room, too. Brooke and Lou obviously leans preppy, but I love the girly take on everything which is hard to find, and the fact that so many of their wallpaper options work perfectly for kids’ rooms. For Emma’s, Kira and I decided that there were so many pink accents in the room–from the curtains to the duvet cover–that a wallpaper with a blue base would even things out. I adore it, and I’m beyond excited to have it installed soon! (It’ll go above the wainscoting, and the wainscoting will be painted white.)

The canopy bed:

This was an early birthday gift from my parents and it arrived yesterday! It’s insanely beautiful, and I wish I were Emma, ha! The best part is that most of Pottery Barn Kids’ white furniture matches paint-wise, so can use her old dresser and bookshelf in the room! (We did, however, end up purchasing matching nightstands.) Thank you, Mom and Dad. Emma was thrilled going to bed in her “princess bed” last night. It was adorable! (I should also note that we are fully aware of the fact that Lucy will likely one day want a “princess bed,” too. 😂 Which is why the metal bed is going to her room until she can vocalize this.)

The duvet cover:

I GOT THIS FROM IKEA! I credit my mother-in-law on this amazing find. Highly recommend! (Ikea now ships smaller items for only $10 I believe! But you can also find the duvet cover on Amazon, if that’s helpful.)

Sara Fitz framed prints:

Not sure where they’ll go, but they’re happening. I’m such a huge fan of Sara Fitz; everything reminds me of home. :) And think her work would look beautiful in a little girls’ room! Maybe the Nantucket basket?

Rug:

Haven’t decided on this but the two featured above are top contenders! (Also not sure these rugs even go with the wallpaper, as Kira and I have not yet discussed that. So I suppose I should say that these two rugs are just rugs I think are pretty. 😜) Can you get over how affordable this one is?!

The curtains:

We kind of designed the entire room around these things, haha. I, of course, found them on Pinterest. Are they not something out of a storybook?! THE BOWS!

The chandelier:

There were chandelier hookups in both girls’ rooms so obviously I was all in. The other one I considered was this scalloped beauty from Ballard Designs, but ultimately decided against it because reviews said it wasn’t bright enough. Very interested in putting it elsewhere in the house one day, though. (Maybe in the powder room?)

The lamps:

I found these a couple of weeks ago at HomeGoods! They’re from Ralph Lauren, and were such a steal.

Scalloped bedskirt:

Not sure if we need it anymore since the bottom of her new bed is so pretty! Thoughts? Cleaner without? Or too cute to ditch? Could also go on Lucy’s bed!

Still deciding on

Art: While Sara Fitz is a definite, I’m also thinking about Elizabeth Mayville’s hair paintings. (Blonde for Emma and brunette for Lucy?!)

Mirror for over dresser: No clue yet. I do have this one from Serena & Lily, though. Might work well?!

Basket or pot for palm: I’m sure we have something that I can repurpose!

Rug: I actually just found SO MANY MORE great options. Thinking I should do a whole blog post on them and see what you guys think!

Chair: While we always read in bed, I’m thinking this would be nice. Mitch has expressed wanting to do stories in a chair instead!

Installation: wainscoting, crown molding and hallway ceiling

Installation: wainscoting, crown molding and hallway ceiling

This is what was happening this past week! Kira’s crew came in and installed wainscoting, crown molding and beadboard (on the hallway ceiling), and I can’t GET OVER how much more character the room now has! And since we’re wallpapering above the wainscoting, the white is really going to break up the pattern, and prevent any sort of “busy” feeling that could result. (Wallpaper is expensive, so it’s nice to only need half the amount, too!)

With the exception of the ceiling, this is something we probably could have done on our own. (If you’re interested in doing it, there are tons of how-to tutorials out there!) But we’re very tired as it is, haha… and something like this would have taken us months. We want to spend our time with the girls, not DIY-ing. (Or dying. I’m so funny.) So we’re very thankful for Kira’s guys who are quick and incredibly friendly. Emma loved them, and when they left, she was pretty sad. Too cute.

Note:

While we were at it, we installed crown molding and picture frame wainscoting in Lucy’s room, too. Since Lucy will be sleeping with us for the next couple of months, her room is less of a priority right now, but happy that the millwork is out of the way and done!

I’m so impressed! Scroll down to see Emma’s reaction to the space–and to her new “princess bed”–after Kira’s construction crew left. SO CUTE!

Next up

Painting the wainscoting and ceiling white, and installing the wallpaper and chandelier! In the meantime, though, this little girl is in heaven. 💕

If you have any ideas or have seen any cute products that you think would work for Emma’s room, please let me know! I’ve received some of our best tips from you guys over the years and I love hearing from you! Many thanks in advance. :)
