Our #1 outdoor activity these days is visiting Oz Park here in Chicago. The girls are ecstatic to go, and we love that we can just park the stroller in the middle of the field and let them run free without worry of coming into contact with others. Wide-open spaces are hard to come by in the city, yet we feel so lucky to have this one! I’ll let the photos speak for themselves, but I love how much fun we can have with nothing but ourselves and the park.

As the beginning of the winter and holiday seasons approach, my eye is on the gear that’ll help us continue to enjoy the great outdoors as much as possible. Here are a few things from Backcountry that I can’t recommend enough:

Patagonia Nano Puff Parka

I’ve owned the Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket for years. It’s amazing, and you may have seen it in my last Backcountry post! This year, though, I invested in the parka version, which is really the same jacket—just longer. The parka is actually perfect for spring and fall, for errands during the winter (when I’m running to and from the car), and for colder summer nights. It’s almost always in my suitcase when I travel, too.

Things worth noting:

  • In general, Patagonia runs on the smaller side. I almost always go one size up with the brand’s products, and that was the case with the Nano Puff. I’m wearing the size small in these photos, and it’s perfect. (Couldn’t move my shoulders as easily in the XS, and thicker sweaters didn’t work.
  • It’s very lightweight but also very warm. It’s nuts. Again, I’m always cold, but this thing packs a punch and blocks out the wind like whoa. I love wearing it during the chillier months when I’m working outdoors on the house; it provides a lot of warmth but I don’t overheat in it.
  • It’s crazy packable. You can smush it and punch it in

Patagonia Diamond Capra Hoodie

Yes to this. It’s so unbelievably soft—and I actually feel that the photos reflect that! I’m normally not that into hoodies, but I made an exception here as the hoodie part looks like a stylish turtleneck from the front. HUGE fan. Similar to other Patagonia pieces I own, I needed to size up to a small here. But it’s perfect! Super warm and cozy, and I’m 100-percent positive that it’ll remain in my closet for years to come. (Also worth noting: The whole “white on white” look is sometimes difficult to pull off since whites rarely share the same hue. The Capra Hoodie is a rich creamy color, though, and therefore really complements the white parka.

Sorel Joan of Arctic Wedge Booties

I need to come clean and admit that when wedge boots first came out, I was a little appalled, haha. But I’m now HERE for the look, and somewhat sad that I didn’t embrace it sooner! First of all, these wedge booties are waterproof, making them ideal for my habitat. ;) They also feature a beautiful cognac-colored leather, and they give me some much-needed height—even when I’m dressed super casually! I’m obsessed with them. Truly. Part of the reason I went for them was because of the stellar reviews, many of which touted their comfort, and woo-ee. They’re just as comfortable as people say. I went up a half size so I can wear them with thicker socks in the winter, but I’m thrilled with the purchase!

Lucy’s Patagonia Floral Down Jacket

I couldn’t help myself with this one! The print reminds me of something out of London, and Lucy has unfortunately grown out of most of Emma’s baby outerwear at this point. So glad I splurged on this number; Lucy’s only 17 months but I got it in a size three so that she’ll get a few years wear out of it. I simply cuff the sleeves, which looks very cute as they’re lined in a beautiful jewel tone red. :) Works great and Lucy can move and play freely in it!

Emma’s Patagonia Los Gatos Cardigan

Over the summer, Emma told me that she’d like a super soft cardigan like I have. So when I saw this one on Backcountry’s site, I knew we needed to try it. Once again, I bought it in a much larger size, which you can obviously see from the photographs. (Emma is four, and she’s wearing a size Small, which is reserved for kids a few years older. Yes, it looks a little oversized now, but I love that she’ll be able to get years’ of wear out of it, and then be able to pass it down to her little sister. Quality over quantity!
