When I was in high school, my mom gave me an opal ring that my father had given to her when they were newly married. He was a lieutenant in the Air Force, and she was an emergency room nurse at a hospital near the base. Life was exciting and full of adventure and love, and my boyfriend-less self used to daydream about what it might be like to one day find that kind of love. As I talked about in this post, I never did get my fairytale romance in high school… or in college, for that matter. But the sparkly opal ring stayed on my finger–a constant reminder of my parents’ love for each other and for me. It was also a symbol of hope. Perhaps one day, I’d find the right person!
AND THEN I LOST IT.

Like, while on an upside-down roller coaster at Six Flags with my eighth graders. (If you’re going to lose something important, might as well go big.) I called my mom crying, and she told me not to worry–that at the end of the day, it was just a ring. She must have said it to me a hundred times, but I couldn’t help but feel heartbroken. Not only had I lost something special of mine, I’d lost something special of hers. Sadness AND guilt. It was a rough day.
(Ironically enough, I got my fairytale romance the following year, sans ring. Oh, Life.)
Fast forward many, many years later, and JTV reaches out and asks whether I’d like to team up for a Mother’s Day post. The product of interest? This gorgeous opal bracelet, which looks so much like that beloved ring my mom and I used to own. Truly, I haven’t taken it off since having received it. It’s sparkly yet dainty, and it obviously reminds me of Mom!
