In collaboration with Zoetis. All opinions are my own. As always, thank you so much for supporting the partnerships that keep Kelly in the City up and running!
Noodle is many things to many people. She’s a living teddy bear for Emma, a nap-disrupter for Lucy, a cuddly writing companion for Kelly, and a source of an astonishing number of chores for me. 😉 (Kidding. I love her.)
But like any good millennials getting on in years, Noodle could use a little canine introspection. I mean, she’s a walking contradiction. Bred to hunt, the dog is terrified of everything, including plastic bags and the wind. (?)
Over the years, it’s become clear to us that Noodle is a city dog that can’t stand the city… so we try to take her to the lake and beach as much as possible. But even though she loves those weekend trips, getting her there is tough because of her motion sickness.
Dog motion sickness is a real thing, and I’m a little sad to admit that it took us this long to diagnose Noodle. I guess we just didn’t recognize the symptoms, which is truly awful. I think we all know how rotten motion sickness feels. Because dachshunds love tight spaces, we kind of assumed that when she climbed underneath the passenger side seat and curled up into a tight ball, she was just getting cozy! But not so much.
When I really started to think about it, I realized that Noodle does start to get nervous when we start the “loading process,” which takes a very long time when you have two kids! She also occasionally yawns, whimpers and licks her chops again and again once inside the car. She doesn’t throw up often, but it does happen once in a while.
It was only recently through our partnership with Zoetis, the world’s largest animal health company, that I came upon Cerenia® (maropitant citrate). Now it’s like Noodle’s whole world has opened up. Cerenia is the only FDA-approved medication that effectively prevents vomiting due to motion sickness in dogs. We give it to her at the beginning of a travel day, and it works for us! (However, it may not work for all dogs.) On our last trip down to the lake house, she tried to sit in the middle seat in between Emma and Lucy! (We didn’t let her because of safety reasons. But the old Noodle never would have done this!) We found that Cerenia effectively prevented vomiting due to motion sickness. And it didn’t make Noodle drowsy so she could enjoy both the journey and the destination.
Cerenia is a game-changer for our family trips.
Sure, Noodle’s recently experienced a Larkin Family Totem Pole demotion due to the arrival of Little Miss Lucy. But she’s definitely livin’ her best life right now–and she’s the happiest she’s ever been! These pictures were taken during a long weekend trip to Lake Bloomington and I think you can tell just how great Noodle’s doing. She spent the weekend rolling down the hill, jumping off the dock, swimming in the lake and prancing around. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that you can see her smiling in these photos! (See more pics of Noodle in the water here. They’re priceless!)
