J.Crew Lady Day Coat Review

Margot Sweater in Tartan (All Margot sweaters here.) / Straight Leg Corduroys (Here’s the kickoff crop version, which works really well with booties. Fantastic boots, btw. Have them in both black and brown!) / Lady Day Coat (Looking for more casual options? Try the Cocoon or the Chateau.) / Gemma Bow Flats / Camera Bag (I love the red, black and leopard!)

Eeee! Friends, I’m so excited.

I’m partnering with J.Crew today to show how you can be both festive and comfy this holiday season! (Perfect for #60daysofplaid, no?!) Dreams do come true. 😉

It’s no secret that most of my wardrobe is J.Crew. It’s always been that way. I love that the brand brings the classics back year after year, and puts fun seasonal spins on them, too. Take the Margot Sweater! Of course, it comes in a wide array of solids, but it’s also available in this fun Stewart tartan—perfect for the holidays!—and preppy navy and white stripes. (Its fit is on the flowy side, btw. I wear an XS.)

Today, though, I’d love to talk about the Lady Day Coat, which is by far my most polished wool coat. It’s gorgeous, and I’ll admit that I have it in a few colors! Things you should know:

  • It’s exceptionally warm and cozy for a dressier coat. No, it’s probably not as warm as its more casual sister coats the Cocoon or the Chateau, which are made out of Italian stadium-cloth wool. But the Lady Day Coat is made of Italian double-cloth wool and has a Thinsulate lining, making it by far the warmest dress coat I’ve ever owned. Total lifesaver!
  • It’s versatile. It’s my go-to coat to wear over dresses, and it’s almost always what I grab for events—especially during the holidays. That said, I also wear it casually, like what you see in these photos, because it’s so comfortable. (I simply roll the sleeves. Really cute that way!) It elevates those looks like whoa.
  • Size up if you plan on layering. I normally order a size 2 in J.Crew coats, with the exception of the Cocoon, which I size down in. But I order a size 4 in the Lady Day because I like being able to wear a thick sweater underneath. The larger size also allows for some extra shoulder movement! That said, if you want a more fitted look and plan on using the coat as a dress coat only, your normal size should be just fine. :)
  • It comes in a ton of colors. I’m wearing it in “Vintage White,” but I adore the hot pink, red and “Nantucket Fog” colors.
  • It has pockets but doesn’t flare out at the sides. They’re hidden in the seam, and they add no bulk to the hip area.
  • The lining is very functional. Because of it, I find that I can slip it on and off very quickly, even when I have a thick sweater underneath. It’s a nice touch!
  • It has tortoise buttons. Who doesn’t appreciate a good tortoise detail?
  • It has a little chain hook on the inside for hanging. I realize that this is a little thing, but it’s really lovely when you’re trying to get out of the cold with two littles. I can simply throw it up on a hook by the door and put it away in the closet once things calm down. :)
