I still want to hire my friend Riley for a painting to hang next to the dresser, but besides that, I think Emma’s room is done?!
In case you’re new here, this was Emma’s room in our first home. I loved it, and just looking at those photos make my heart swell; it was such a special time in our lives. But we also had to use the tiny space as a playroom, and Emma quickly outgrew it. Which prompted our Konmari adventure. 🙈 Needless to say, things were tight, and her new bedroom is an awesome change!
When we were house hunting, we placed a lot of importance on having space for guests. We wanted our parents–who all live far away–to be comfortable while with us. (Let’s just say that we did not achieve that in our first home. 😆) And because this used to be the main bedroom before the attic was bumped out, it works great as a guest room, too. When we have people stay, we just move Emma up to my office. And down the line when Lucy is a better sleeper, the girls will simply bunk up.
We hired Kira David Design to add some character, and she did the wainscoting, molding and beadboard ceilings in the hallway. As usual, her work was absolutely perfect! (Love you, Kira.) We’re so happy with how it turned out; it’s very much in keeping with the traditional style of our 1800s home, which is what we were going for. :)
In terms of decor, my goal with the room was to create something that would work for a child but also for a teenager. Of course, we’ll see who Emma becomes. (Adolescent Kelly begged her parents to let her paint cow spots on her walls. They were/are the best parents ever, and agreed… and I fully intend on following in their footsteps and helping our girls’ individual personalities shine through!)
For now, though, the room really does feel like Emma. (She helped decorate most of it!) And I love that.
*Shot with the mirrorless Canon EOS R and 24mm lens. (With adapter.) Normally I shoot with this lens, which is razor sharp and SO much bang for your buck. It’s my preferred glass! And let me assure you that the room doesn’t normally look like this, haha! I cleaned up for you. ;)
