Yesterday was a great day. The kind of day that when you open your eyes in the morning, you’re excited and actually want to get out of bed. And as I sit here at the end of it, I can report that it completely lived up to itself from start to finish.
To be fair, it’s easy to have one of these days when you wake up on Sea Island, Georgia.
After all, I spent the first moments of it on our balcony enjoying the sweet Georgian breeze, watching the sun come up and sipping an espresso. I also got up before Emma! (Which, I’m embarrassed to admit, hasn’t happened in a long, long time.) As my girls slept, I read the newspaper, showered with abandon, and even put together a couple of proper outfits for all we had planned. I made each second that hour count, and it was bliss.
Let’s pause for a moment, though, and talk about the shoes that Kelly and I are wearing in these photos. I’m wearing the new Sperry Cup Modern Boat Shoes, and Kelly’s wearing the new Sailor Boat Shoes, which we both love. If you’ve been reading here for a while, you know that we’re a Sperry family through and through. They’re classic, comfortable and somehow both formal and casual at the same time. I mean, any shoe that I can literally wear boating and then to a steakhouse afterwards is a winner in my book!
My shoes are awesome; I have a ton of the original Sperry boat shoes, but I’m a big fan of the more modern version, too. “Boat shoe meets sneaker,” if you will. They’re durable and lightweight, and they feature full-grain leather uppers, rawhide laces, a moccasin construction that conforms to your foot for ultimate comfort, Ortholite insoles for stability, and a no-slip sole. I think they look great with both outfits you see me sporting in these pics, too. Again, they work for casual looks and more formal ones. Amazing!

Likewise, Kelly is obsessed with Sperry as well. She swears by her Seaports, and says they’re the comfiest loafers she’s ever owned. (She wants me to add that she’s “super excited” about the anchor loafer in brown and navy, as well as the navy striped kiltie loafer. And that she’s owned this pair of timeless boat shoes for as long as she can remember!) Similarly, she says her Sailor Boat Shoes are extraordinarily comfortable–something that’s very important to my pregnant wife right now. ;) They have a soft nubuck upper, a slim profile and ribbon laces for a cute, feminine touch. But back to the day. I should probably mention exactly why I woke up so jittery with happiness, though. It was DOLPHIN DAY. Sea Island offers a ton of boating activities, and we opted for the dolphin tour, which is the last one on this page (in case you’re interested in learning more). It was incredible! We legitimately saw a dozen dolphins, and each was more majestic than the last.
As a kid growing up in Central Illinois, I guess I sort of fantasized about life in the more exotic parts of the world, and I put posters of dolphins all over my room. I played with dolphin toys and I slept with dolphin stuffed animals. I had a purpose, and that purpose was porpoises.
Now that I’m an adult, I can happily report that I still freakin’ love dolphins. I can’t get enough. In addition to wearing my special nautical outfit, I even hung around the docks afterwards so I could talk dolph’ with the captain for an hour. It was just a perfect little thing for me. I loved every second. Oh yeah, and my kid did, too. 😉 I SWEAR. I know the life vest photos make it seem otherwise, haha.
Kelly and I had a true date night later that evening.
Because so many of you messaged us about how fantastic Sea Island’s babysitting service is, we decided to try it, and it worked out amazingly! Our babysitter was a graduate school student studying education, and she was lovely. Emma had a blast with her, and it gave Kelly and me the chance to have some alone time.
First, we took a sunset walk on the beach, during which Kelly switched out her heels for her Sperrys. (WISE move. Heels, in my opinion, are never practical. The worst.) And then we cruised around The Lodge‘s stunning property with cocktails and mocktails, chatting with other guests. (Is it me or is everyone SO friendly in Georgia?! I love it here.) Afterwards, we had the most perfect dinner at Colt & Alison Steakhouse. And let me tell you: my steak was truly the best steak I’ve ever had. They lit it on fire right next to the table. It was nuts.
Anyway, it was one of those perfect days, and just looking back through the photos makes me realize how lucky we are to be here together. Thanks for reading!
