Ruffle Blouse (On sale! I’m wearing an XS for reference. Love this more casual ruffled tee, too. Also: Tuckernuck’s sale has been extended! They’ve always been known for a good ruffle, haha.) / Rag & Bone Jeans (Mine are sold out, but these are VERY similar. I also love these from Paige. As you know, I’m a Rag & Bone “Capri” convert, haha.) / J.Crew Pumps (Sold out, but here are some amazing plaid holiday shoe options: one / two / three / four / five — And more below! #OMG) / J.Crew Coat (Particularly love it in “Sandstone.” Also available here. If you need sizing help, I’d say the coat is pretty generous. I’m wearing a size 0, and I have a lot of room for sweaters.) / Similar Necklace / Louis Vuitton Tote / Monica Vinader Bracelet c/o

Mitch and I spent a couple of days last week in New York, and it was so great. Going back is always bittersweet; a mixture of so many emotions. I have to admit that my plan was to live in NYC forever… and meeting Mitch–who eventually led me to Chicago–threw me for a loop. ;) It goes without saying, though, that I’m ecstatic my little plan didn’t work out. (Really ecstatic.) But man: it always feel good to go home.
While we were there, we decided that we missed New York a little too much. So we came up with yet another plan: in a year, we’re going to rent an apartment there. We’ll probably only do it for a month or so, but we’ve come to the realization that while we know we can’t live in NYC full-time, going back for a few days here and there just isn’t enough. And while there are logistics to work out, they aren’t as complicated as we thought they’d be!

The only “out there” decisions I’ve ever made have been quitting my editorial job to teach in the South Bronx and leaving New York for Chicago. Typically, I go the safe route. It’s just who I am. But this is one “out there” decision I want to add to my list. You know those books in which the protagonist decides to totally change up her life? Like, she ups and moves overseas or something. Granted, I’m not in a crisis over here. Life is pretty wonderful, actually. But this is something that sounds like so much fun to me. I mean, yes, I lived there forever… but I always had a 9 to 5 (for all intents and purposes) while there. Why not take advantage now, when I can do so much more with a flexible schedule? And while Emma’s still young enough and not yet in school?
Why not?
We’re also thinking about doing this in London or Paris. Far more adventurous, haha. Though right now, we’re leaning towards New York.
But do we think I’m crazy?
Would you ever do something like this?

I think that’s an absolutely amazing idea! Spending a month or so in a different city (whether familiar or not) sounds like not only a fantastic adventure but also like a lot of fun!
Ah yay come to New York!!! So exciting. Hope I can see you when you are out there!

I would totally do it especially if you have the time!

OMG! If I could live in London for a month, I totally would! Take full advantage of a teachers and bloggers flexibility (with teachers having some time in the summer off) – there are so many of us who will be so envious!!! It sounds like a fabulous life experience.
Obviously I support this plan! I will say though, from what I’ve heard, navigating NYC with a stroller can be a real struggle. That said, if you have the job freedom and Emma’s still young, why not?
Such a cool idea! I’d love to do a month or two in Paris. Hopefully my schedule will allow it someday.

This sounds like a most amazing plan!! Y’all will have so much fun and now is definitely the time to do it!
I love that idea and have dreamed about returning to Paris in just that manner!
So happy to see those delightful plaid pumps made their way into your closet!
And I don’t think a month or two in New York is a bad idea at all. Every time sean and I are in the city I ask him why we aren’t moving there, and I’m only in CT so it’s not even like some big cross the country move, we’d still be a quick train ride from our hometown. New York is just a great place to be, even more so if you don’t have a 9-5 job getting in the way of all the cool stuff going on every day.

That’s so exciting!! Also, I love those shoes!

I think that’s an awesome idea! Right now, I’m taking a year between undergrad and law school, working for 2 weeks and then traveling for a week. We mostly stay in airbnbs and its been awesome! I say go for it and it’ll be cool for Emma when she gets into school to say she’s already been/lived in a couple different places. It sounds like a great adventure!
Quitting my job to move to Chicago over the summer is the craziest thing I’ve ever done. Like you, I always played it safe for the most part, but I finally hit a point where I thought, if not now, when? I don’t think you’re crazy ;) I say go for it!

OMG that is an amazing idea! I would love to do something like that but unfortunately my job & my husband’s job would never give use enough time off to do that. I would probably do a place like London since I’m already in New York :)
Omg. I love this idea! Doug and I have talked about doing the same thing one day. You are so not crazy – I say if your schedule allows for it, you do it. You only live once, after all! xx
Isn’t That Charming.
You look absolutely stunning! I think moving somewhere new for a few months (or longer) on a whim would be so magical. Can’t wait to see what you end up doing!

Love your coat!! I say if you have the freedom to do so, why not live somewhere else for a month or two? It sounds like a great adventure!!

That’s wonderful!!! You’ll only be a few hours from me…I can finally meet you!
Not crazy at all. With Mitch’s teaching schedule and you can work as long as you have internet, how perfect. I always say don’t live life with regrets. Not crazy at all. When Emma gets older, try San Diego – so much to do with little kids.
I say do it while you can! And I also vote Paris…just under a 4 hour train ride from where I am in Germany…just sayin’ ;)
It is a great idea! I split my time 25% in CA 75% in TX and it has been the best decision ever! We always look forward to going out to CA. We have an apartment and an office there, so we can stay on top of our work! WE could never live in CA full time because it is so expensive, so this is our happy medium!

California is our place we want to go to for a couple months!
My husband and I have talked about doing something like this! I love that you are planning it! We really need to just decide to do it and plan it!
We did exactly what you are thinking about in Fall 2015 to the town in Virginia where my husband went to college and we lived for four years. We wanted to get away from Florida heat in the Fall, and see football games and catch up with friends. DH was able to work in the local branch of his firm. Was great, but the biggest problem was finding a short-term rental that takes dogs since we were traveling with our pooch. We ended up staying with friends and in hotels. It was more of a bag drag than we had planned since we stayed in hotels in four different cities (visited MIL along the way, clients visits for DH in another city). There was much unloading/loading of the car with a month’s worth of stuff for us and the dog. I would only do it again only if we were able to spend the entire month in a rental, and weren’t making so many side trips.
P.S. Discovered your blog right before Emma was born, and have to say how much I love it, seeing your great style and glimpses of your life! Emma and Noodle are precious!
A month or two in NYC would be so fun! Can’t wait to read more about it :)

Katie
