As I’m pretty much as Irish as you can get, I’m extremely pale. (My students constantly ask me whether I’m a vampire. ;)) I have to lather on the SPF 50 almost constantly when I go to the beach, and even that doesn’t always do the trick. I’ve actually acquired a sunburn just from driving a car with a sunroof. But I think my lack of protective pigment in my skin is the only gripe I have with my Irish heritage. Otherwise, I am one proud Irish-American! ;)
Last summer, I took a trip to Ireland with Mitch’s family. It was amazing. We rented a house in GaryKennedy, a tiny town in County Tipperary, and took day trips from there. We saw everything from the Ring of Kerry and Kilarney to the Blarney Castle and Dublin. The most memorable part of the trip for me was meeting my family, who lives in Scariff, a town in County Clare, coincidentally just a few miles away from Garykennedy. I met my Grandpa’s cousin, and he took us around my family’s town. I even got to see the house my great-grandfather was born in! Through him, we learned that my family actually knows, and is friends with, Mitch’s family! (We’re not related, though. We looked into it. Collar tug. ;))
Visiting Ireland was the trip of a lifetime. Not only is it one of the most beautiful places in the world, the country is also home to some of the most kind-hearted, generous people I’ve ever met. I’m so lucky to have met my extended family, and see the country my grandpa loves so much! I also consider myself incredibly lucky to have experienced the trip with Mitch’s family, who is absolutely wonderful. They too were able to meet their extended family! Incredible.
So this Saint Patrick’s Day is an extra-special one. Which is why I was decked out in green today for the absolutely wonderful St. Patrick’s Day-themed “Jack and Jill” bridal shower/party we attended. Huge shout out to Meghan from Everyday Fashion and Finance who is currently in Ireland! Hope you’re having a blast!
